PRESS RELEASE
Launch of the project Fishing for a SEA without garbage
Docapesca, November 9, 2015
On November 20th, the launch of the project A Pesca por um MAR without garbage will take place at the Fishing Port of Peniche.
Within the strategic objectives and actions defined in the National Strategy for the Sea 2013-2020 and in compliance with the Marine Strategy Framework Directive (Directive 2008/56/EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 17 June 2008), the Fishermen and Docapesca project for a SEA Without Garbage focuses on one of the main threats to the preservation of marine resources and ecosystems – marine debris.
Based on the fundamental role that the fishing sector plays in solving this environmental, economic and social problem, which affects the sustainability of its activity, this project acts on two levels: preventing the entry of garbage into the marine environment and removing garbage of the Oceans. Collaboration between fishermen, their respective vessels and fishing ports is also important for raising awareness at the level of coastal and fishing communities and promoting the co-responsibility of all those who are directly or indirectly involved in this problem.
The main objectives of Fishing for a SEA Without Garbage are to improve waste management on board fishing vessels and in fishing ports, and to make fishermen aware of the importance of adopting or maintaining good environmental practices. By promoting the selective collection of waste generated on board and captured in fishing gear and providing the appropriate infrastructure for its reception on land, this project brings together fishermen and ports in improving the environmental conditions of the Portuguese coastal zone and preserving marine ecosystems .
The project, conceived by Docapesca - Portos e Lotas, SA with the support of APLM - Portuguese Association of Marine Waste, Municipality of Peniche, Valorsul, SA and Ambinatura - Conservation and Maintenance of the Environment, Ltd., and financed under PROMAR, will involve 90 vessels in collaboration with ADAPI - Association of Industrial Fisheries Owners, CAPA - Cooperative of Artisanal Fisheries Owners, CRL and Opcentro - General Fisheries Cooperative of the Center, CRL
