Portuguese Environment Agency, IP

Public institute integrated in the indirect administration of the State whose mission is  propose,  develop and monitor the integrated and participative management of environmental and sustainable development policies.

General Directorate of Maritime Policy  

Central service of the direct administration of the State whose mission is to develop  the National Strategy for the Sea (ENM), drafting the national policy on the sea, planning  the maritime space in its different uses and activities, monitor the development of the European Union's Integrated Maritime Policy and promote national and international cooperation in the maritime sphere.


General direction  of Natural Resources, Safety and Maritime Services

Central service of the State's direct administration, whose mission is to implement policies for the preservation and knowledge of marine natural resources, the implementation of fisheries, aquaculture, manufacturing industry and related activities, the development of safety and maritime services, including the maritime-port sector, as well as guaranteeing the regulation, inspection, inspection, coordination and control of the activities developed under those policies.


Company in the State Business Sector whose mission is to operate in the fisheries sector, namely the First Sale of Fish and related activities.

Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, IP (IPMA)

public institute  integrated in the indirect administration of the State.  It is the State laboratory whose mission is to promote and coordinate scientific research, technological development, innovation and the provision of services in the domain of the sea and the atmosphere, ensuring the implementation of national strategies and policies in its areas of activity.


International organizations and initiatives

European Environment Agency (EEA)

European Union agency whose mission is to provide consistent and independent information on the environment.

OSPAR Convention

International Convention for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the North East Atlantic. Fifteen countries are part of this commission: Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, Ireland, Luxembourg, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom.

National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) -  marine debris

Section of  US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Agency dedicated to marine litter.

Plastic Soup Foundation

Organization that aims to prevent plastic from entering the oceans.


United Nations Environment Program that promotes the sustainable development of the global environment.

UNEP - Global Program of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment from Land-based Activities (GPA)

Global Program of Action for the Protection of the Marine Environment of onshore activities.


UNEP - Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML)

Marine Waste Global Partnership that aims to protect human health and the global environment with the main objective of reducing and managing marine waste.

Algalita Marine Research Foundation (AMRI)

It is a California-based, non-profit research organization dedicated to protecting and improving the marine environment and watersheds through education and research on the impact of plastic pollution.

Brazilian Association of Marine Waste  (ABLM)

Association, also known as ASSOCIAÇÃO GLOBAL GARBAGE BRASIL, whose mission is to defend, preserve and restore the environment by promoting quality of life and sustainable development.

EUCC – Coastal & Marine Union

Organization whose mission is the use and sustainable development of the coast and the sea.


The Joint Group of Experts on the Scientific Aspects of Marine Environmental Protection (GESAMP)

Group of experts created in 1969 that advises the United Nations on matters related to the protection of the marine environment.


Organization founded by municipalities in with the aim of giving a political voice at the international level, sharing good practices and finding solutions to maritime political problems affecting coastal communities. It represents over 100 members from Belgium, UK, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany, Faeroe Islands, Netherlands, Ireland and Isle of Man.

Marine Debris Solutions

Portal that shows the initiatives promoted by the plastic industry with the aim of reducing marine litter and provides information about its origins.

ocean  Conservancy

Organization that fights for the conservation of the oceans, founded in 1972 in the United States.

5  gyres

Organization whose mission is to investigate and communicate the global impact of plastic pollution of the oceans and implement strategies to eliminate the accumulation of plastic in the 5 subtropical gyres.
